Component Description

Influenza serological testing of stored sera from NHANES 2010 collection, across all age groups, were used in this study to determine the population level of cross reactive antibodies to avian influenza A (H7N9) virus and related influenza viruses. This data release contains the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) and microneutralization (MN) assay titers to H7N9 viruses and seasonal H3N2 viruses.

Eligible Sample

A sample of participants across 9 age groups from stored NHANES 2010 sera (N = 900).

Description of Laboratory Methodology

Antibody titers against H7N9 and seasonal H3N2 influenza viruses were measured with hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay and microneutralization (MN) assays at Influenza Division, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The selected H7N9 virus target was A/Anhui/1/2013. Seasonal H3N2 virus A/Perth/16/2009 was used as control.

The geometric mean titers are reported in both HI and MN assays. Because H7N9 is a novel influenza virus and currently there are not infected cases identified in US, a cut off value has not been determined.

Data Processing and Editing

Data was compiled after all the antibody testing was complete. The data were not edited.

Data will only be available through the Research Data Center.

Laboratory Quality Assurance and Monitoring

All QC procedures were followed according to established laboratory Special Operation Procedures.

Analytic Notes

There are four variables:

MN A/Anhui/1/2013 (H7N9): Geometric mean of microneutralization (MN) titers against the influenza H7N9 virus A/Anhui/1/2013.

MN A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2): Geometric mean of microneutralization (MN) titers against the influenza H3N2 virus A/Perth/16/2009.

HI A/Anhui/1/2013 BPL (H7N9): Geometric mean of hemagglutination inhibition titers (HI) against the BPL inactivated influenza H7N9 virus A/Anhui/1/2013.

HI A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2): Geometric mean of hemagglutination inhibition (HI) titers against the BPL inactivated influenza H3N2 virus A/Perth/16/2009.

A titer of 5 means the titer achieved by the sera specimen is below the detection level of the assay (negative). The samples were assayed at 1:10 pre dilution , titers <10 were documented as 5 for calculation purposes.
