Early Infant Diagnosis for HIV: Implementation Guide
E471
CD-ROM Early Infant Diagnosis of HIV Implementation Guide for Program
Managers, Clinical Staff, and Laboratorians, March 2009
Early diagnosis of HIV in infants provides a critical opportunity to strengthen follow up of HIV-exposed children, assure early access to ARV treatment for infected children, provide reassuring information to families of uninfected children, aid evaluation of PMTCT programs, and increase capacity to use laboratory technology. Responding to a need for standardized guidance for early infant diagnosis (EID) of HIV, 3 manuals were developed and are available in electronic format on this CD.

Early Infant Diagnosis of HIV Implementation Guide Book 1: Guide for
Program Managers
Responding to increased availability of pediatric therapy in resource-limited countries and increased regional capacity to manage treatment of HIV-infected children, this guide provides on overview of infant diagnosis for program managers. It covers the basics of setting up early infant diagnosis services, including choice of a test and an appropriate testing algorithm, clinical staff training needs, required laboratory infrastructure, and program evaluation. The table includes the guide and appendices.

Early Infant Diagnosis of HIV Implementation Guide Book 2: Training
Curriculum for Clinical Staff
This 5-module training curriculum on early infant diagnosis and infant follow-up is intended for midwives, nurses, doctors, and other healthcare staff. Following the training, staff members will be able to identify infants in need of testing, counsel caregivers before testing, and provide appropriate follow-up care for HIV-exposed and HIV-infected infants and young children. They will also learn how to collect, handle, and send dried blood spot (DBS) specimens for early infant diagnosis. The fifth module is an interactive group exercise that evaluates and reinforces skills gained from the training.

Early Infant Diagnosis of HIV Implementation Guide Book 3: Guide for
Laboratorians
This manual is a training and reference guide for laboratorians providing early infant diagnostic services. As infants retain maternal antibodies to HIV for many months after birth, a diagnostic test based on viral material is necessary for definitive diagnosis of infant HIV infection until 18 months of age. The recommended viral method for early infant diagnosis programs is PCR (polymerase chain reaction) amplification of HIV-1 DNA from peripheral blood mononuclear cells from dried blood spots (DBS). Specific considerations for PCR services are addressed in this guide, including: necessary laboratory infrastructure, equipment, supplies, standard operating procedures, quality assurance measures, and appropriate reporting of test results
