NHIS-Detailed Race and Ethnicity Summary Health Statistics

Interactive Summary Health Statistics for Adults,
by Detailed Race and Ethnicity healthcare clipboard

Interactive Summary Health Statistics for Adults, by Detailed Race and Ethnicity provide estimates as three-year averages of selected health topics for adults aged 18 years and over based on final data from the National Health Interview Survey. Estimates can be grouped by single race, multiple race, race combined with Hispanic or Latino origin, or Asian and Hispanic detailed groups by clicking on the "Group by" dropdown menu. This level of detail is not available in the annual Interactive Summary Health Statistics for Adults. Single year estimates can be found in Interactive Summary Health Statistics for Adults

After you select the available health topics, the table will automatically be updated. The data can be viewed as a plot under the "Charts" tab, with line graphs for trends over time (when available) and grouped bar graphs for the cross-sectional view. The "Technical Notes" tab displays links to technical documentation on the measures and methodology used to produce the estimates. The generated table and graph can be downloaded with the download button under each tab. To view the Korn-Graubard confidence intervals, select the "95% confidence intervals" checkbox.

Notes

Angina/angina pectoris

Respondents were asked if they had ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that they had angina (or angina pectoris). More information on the questions and variables used for this measure can be found in the adult codebook.

Hispanic or Latino origin and race

"Hispanic" indicates Hispanic or Latino origin and refers to adults who are of Hispanic or Latino origin and may be of any race or combination of races. NH=Not Hispanic or Latino. "Black" indicates Black or African American. AIAN=American Indian or Alaska Native. NHPI=Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. Race is based on a respondent's description of their own racial background, regardless of Hispanic or Latino origin. Federal surveys give respondents the option of reporting more than one race. Therefore, two basic ways of defining a race group are possible. A group may be defined as those who reported one race and no other race (single race concept) or as those who reported that race regardless of whether they also reported another race (single or multiple races concept). This grouping shows data using the single race approach. The use of this approach does not imply that it is the preferred method of presenting or analyzing data.

Based on household interviews of a sample of the civilian noninstitutionalized population. Estimates are based on responses about the sample adult. Data came from the Sample Adult File and were weighted using the Sample Adult weight, divided by three. Unless otherwise noted, unknowns were not included in the denominators when calculating percentages. Two-sided 95% confidence intervals are calculated using the Clopper-Pearson method adapted for complex surveys by Korn and Graubard. In 2019, the NHIS questionnaire was redesigned to better meet the needs of data users. Due to changes in weighting and design methodology, direct comparisons between estimates for 2019 and beyond to earlier years should be made with caution, as the impact of these changes has not been fully evaluated at this time.
