Summary Health Statistics

Interactive Summary Health Statistics for Children — 2019 child image

Interactive Summary Health Statistics for Children — 2019 provide annual estimates of selected health topics for children under age 18 years based on final data from the National Health Interview Survey. Estimates can be grouped by characteristics such as age, race, or sex by clicking on the "Group by" dropdown menu.

After you select the available health topics, the table will automatically be updated. The data can be viewed as a plot under the "Charts" tab, with line graphs for trends over time and grouped bar graphs for the cross-sectional view. The "Technical Notes" tab displays links to previous data releases as well as technical documentation on the measures and methodology used to produce the estimates. The generated table and graph can be downloaded with the download button under each tab. To view the Korn-Graubard confidence intervals, select the "Show 95% confidence intervals" checkbox.

Notes

Based on household interviews of a sample of the civilian noninstitutionalized population. Estimates are based on responses about the sample child, not all children in the family. Data came from the Sample Child File and were weighted using the Sample Child weight. Unknowns were not included in the denominators when calculating percentages. Two-sided 95% confidence intervals are calculated using the Clopper-Pearson method adapted for complex surveys by Korn and Graubard. In 2019, the NHIS questionnaire was redesigned to better meet the needs of data users. Due to changes in weighting and design methodology, direct comparisons between estimates for 2019 and earlier years should be made with caution, as the impact of these changes has not been fully evaluated at this time. Thus, estimates based on the 2019 NHIS are shown separately from estimates based on the 2015–2018 NHIS (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhis/KIDS/www/index.htm).
