Worker Health Charts

Chronic Conditions (BRFSS) Charts
Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), 2016-2020

These charts show the prevalence among workers of ever being diagnosed with the following chronic conditions: asthma, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and depression. See the data dictionary for definitions of Chronic Conditions. When charting by occupation or industry, you may choose between adjusted or unadjusted results. When charting by demographic variables, the “Advanced” button will allow you to either “filter” to see results for a single industry, or “group” to see results for multiple industries. Hovering the mouse pointer over the chart bars will show more information or allow you to drill down to more detailed industries or occupations (if available). Please note that BRFSS population estimates are not national estimates, as data are limited to those states that collected industry and occupation information.

The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is the largest continuously conducted health survey system in the world, conducting telephone interviews with more than 400,000 U.S. adults each year. All 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several U.S. territories collaborate with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to collect information on health conditions and risk factors from the non-institutionalized adult population. Since 2013 NIOSH has sponsored an optional module designed to collect industry and occupation (I & O) data, and many states have incorporated this module into their survey. Learn more about this data and how it is used at the BRFSS Topic Page.
