Component Description
The physical functioning questionnaire (variable name prefix PFQ), made available through the Research Data Center (RDC), provides participant-level interview data on functional limitations caused by long-term physical, mental, and emotional problems or illness. It can be used to assess an individual’s level of disability. The questions were asked in the NHANES National Youth Fitness Study (NNYFS) and of NHANES participants aged 3 to 15 years, during the second year of the 2011-2012 NHANES cycle.
Eligible Sample
All survey participants aged 3 to 15 years were eligible.
Interview Setting and Mode of Administration
The questions were asked in the home, using the Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) (interviewer administered) system.
A proxy provided information for all survey participants.
Data Processing and Editing
The data were reviewed for completeness, consistency, and illogical values. Due to concerns about confidentiality, detailed information on special equipment used by the participants (i.e., question PFQ037) was not released in the public dataset, but is available through the NCHS Research Data Center.
