Component Description

The physical functioning section (variable name prefix PFQ) provides participant level interview data on functional limitations caused by long-term physical, mental, and emotional problems or illness.

Eligible Sample

The questions were asked of all survey participants by proxy.

Interview Setting and Mode of Administration

The physical functioning questionnaire was asked in the home, by trained interviewers, using the Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) system.

Data Processing and Editing

The data were reviewed for completeness, consistency, and illogical values. Due to concerns about confidentiality, detailed information on special equipment used by the participants (i.e., question PFQ037) was not released in the public dataset, but is available through the NCHS Research Data Center.
