Component Description

The Kidney Conditions – Urology File (variable name prefix KIQ_U_L) provides personal and self-interview data on kidney disease, dialysis, urinary incontinence, and nocturia.

Eligible Sample

All participants aged 20 years and older in the August 2021-August 2023 sample were eligible.

Interview Setting and Mode of Administration

Kidney disease and dialysis questions (i.e., KIQ022 and KIQ025) were asked by trained interviewers using the Computer-Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) system in the participant’s home or by telephone. Questions on urinary incontinence (i.e., KIQ005, KIQ010, KIQ042, KIQ044, KIQ052) and nocturia (i.e., KIQ481) were self-administered at the Mobile Examination Center (MEC) using the Audio Computer-Assisted Self-Interview (ACASI) system as part of the MEC interview.

For details on the administration of the KIQ_U_L section, please refer to the August 2021-August 2023 kidney conditions (household interview) and kidney (MEC ACASI) questionnaires on the NHANES website.

Quality Assurance & Quality Control

The CAPI and ACASI systems are programmed with built-in consistency checks to reduce data entry errors. Both systems also use online help screens to assist interviewers and participants in defining key terms used in the questionnaires.

Data Processing and Editing

The data were edited for completeness, consistency, and illogical values. Because the data are based on self-reports, not all inconsistencies could be resolved. It is recommended that analysts review the data carefully prior to analysis.

Analytic Notes

Incontinence Severity Index

Questions KIQ.005 “How often do you have urinary leakage?” and KIQ.010 “How much urine do you lose each time?” comprise the Incontinence Severity Index (Sandvik, 2000). This index, based on information about frequency in four levels and amount of leakage in three levels, can be multiplied to obtain an index value (1-12). The four-level severity index is based on the following index values: 1-2, slight; 3-6, moderate; 8-9, severe; 10-12, very severe.

Appropriate sample weights

Interview weight: KIQ022, KIQ025
Examination weight: KIQ005, KIQ010, KIQ042, KIQ044, KIQ052, KIQ481

The interview weight should be used when an analysis uses data only from the household interview (i.e., SP Questionnaire). If an analysis uses data from the MEC (i.e., MEC interview) exclusively, or in conjunction with the household interview data, the examination weight should be used.

The NHANES kidney conditions-urology questions for participants aged 20 and older did not change between the 2017-March 2020 and August 2021-August 2023 data collection cycles except for a wording modification to KIQ480 (note: now appears as KIQ481 in the August 2021-August 2023 cycle). KIQ026, KIQ029, KIQ0430, KIQ450, KIQ046, KIQ470, and KIQ050 were removed in the August 2021-August 2023 cycle.

Please refer to the NHANES Analytic Guidelines and the on-line NHANES Tutorial for further details on the use of sample weights and other analytic issues.
