Component Description

The health insurance questionnaire (variable name prefix HIQ), made available through the Research Data Center (RDC), provides participant-level interview data on insurance coverage, type of insurance coverage, coverage of prescription drugs, and uninsured status during the past 12 months. These questions were asked in the NHANES National Youth Fitness Survey (NNYFS) and of NHANES participants aged 3 to 15 years, during the second year of the 2011-2012 NHANES cycle.

Eligible Sample

All survey participants aged 3 to 15 years were eligible.

Interview Setting and Mode of Administration

The health insurance questionnaire was asked in the home, by trained interviewers, using the Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) system.

A proxy provided information for all survey participants.

Data Processing and Editing

The data were reviewed for completeness, consistency, and illogical values.
