Component Description

The Smoking – Cigarette Use questionnaire (variable name prefix SMQ), available through the Research Data Center (RDC), provides a brief summary of the history and current cigarette use. The questions were asked in the NHANES National Youth Fitness Study (NNYFS) and of NHANES participants aged 12 to 15 years, during the second year of the 2011-2012 NHANES cycle.

Eligible Sample

Survey participants aged 12 to 15 years were eligible. Proxy interviews were not conducted.

Interview Setting and Mode of Administration

The questions were asked in the NNYFS Mobile Examination Center (MEC) using the Audio Computer-Assisted Self-Interviewing system (ACASI) and in English and Spanish only.

Data Processing and Editing

The data were reviewed for completeness, consistency, and illogical values.
