In 1990, the Surgeon General issued the first report that focused on the health benefits of smoking cessation. This is the 1985 Report of the Surgeon General regarding the health consequences of smoking, including cancer and chronic lung disease in the workplace. The report provides a detailed review of the relation between smoking and hazardous substances in the workplace. The added health burden for workers who smoke cigarettes is particularly disturbing, and for some, the burden is substantial.
