The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, announced today the release of the final version of its public health assessment for the Marine Corps Logistics Base (MCLB) in Barstow, California.

Under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA), ATSDR conducts public health assessments for all sites the Environmental Protection Agency places on the National Priorities List (NPL). Following EPA's listing of MCLB, ATSDR evaluated the public health significance of environmental contamination at the base.

Public health assessments report information about hazardous substances in the environment and evaluate whether exposure to those substances in the past, present or future could harm people in the area. They identify health studies or other activities that might be needed and make recommendations to other government agencies, such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and state and local health and environmental departments, concerning actions to protect public health.

Public health assessments rely on three sources of information: environmental data, health data and reports of community concerns. Environmental data detail the chemicals at a site and indicate their potential pathways to reach humans. Health data include reports of injury, disease or death in the community, as well as information on the known human effects of chemicals at the site. Reports of community concerns document the public's descriptions of how the site affects their health and quality of life.

ATSDR identified and evaluated six potential exposure pathways at MCLB. Exposure pathways are routes or avenues where contamination can move and come into contact with people. Based on that evaluation, ATSDR found no apparent public health hazard for the following pathways: (1) past use of the Nebo Main Base production wells for on-base drinking and production; (2) past, current and future use of the Nebo Main Base production wells for irrigation;(3) past use of off-site private wells southeast of the Nebo Main Base;(4) past use of the Yermo Annex production wells for on-base drinking and production;(5) and past use of off-site private wells east of the Yermo Annex. For the sixth exposure pathway of soil at the rifle range, ATSDR found no public health hazard for past, current and future exposure to soils at the rifle range given present land use.

The health assessment will be available for public review on or after October 15 at the following repositories:
