(Atlanta) The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) will host a meeting of its Community and Tribal Subcommittee on Tuesday, May 2, and Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at the Holiday Inn Select Hotel, 130 Clairmont Road, Decatur, Georgia.

The Community and Tribal Subcommittee is comprised of 4 ATSDR Board of Scientific Counselors (BSC) members. Eleven individuals from communities and tribes affected by environmental contamination serve as Special Consultants to the CTS.

The purpose of the CTS is to provide the BSC and ATSDR with the views and recommendations of community/tribal representatives on ATSDR's community involvement program, practices, and policies, and other relevant issues impacting communities and tribes who live near Superfund and hazardous waste sites.

The Subcommittee will review ATSDR's community involvement practices, programs, and policies, provide advice, findings, and recommendations to the Board on these issues; and bring broad-based community and tribal involvement issues to the attention of the Board.

The primary agenda item for the meeting will be a discussion with Department of Defense (DOD) and Department of Energy (DOE) representatives about federal facilities. Additionally, members of the subcommittee will discuss with agency officials how the ATSDR can be responsive when dealing with multiple factions within a community (individual residents, community organizations, national organizations, etc).

A public comment period in which members of the public can call in to express their opinions or concerns will be held on Wednesday, May 3 from 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm (Eastern Standard Time). Participants can join in by calling, toll free, 1-800-311-3437. The Conference Code is 464408. Please call in between 12:45 - 1:00 pm to be placed in the call-in queue.
