The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has released its draft health consultation report for the environmental investigation of Crestwood, Illinois drinking water. Both federal and state officials have concluded that there is not enough information to know past groundwater contamination levels, and they made recommendations for the site after reviewing all available data. Public comments on the report will be received until April 19th.

ATSDR and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) will host a public meeting to answer questions about the Crestwood Health Consultation on Saturday, March 13th at 2:00 PM in the Ozinga Chapel Auditorium of Trinity Christian College, 6601 W. College Drive, Palos Heights. IDPH will also discuss its recent Crestwood Cancer Assessment Report.

Chemicals from a dry cleaning facility at one time affected Crestwood’s water supply. ATSDR and IDPH evaluated all available information to understand whether the contamination could lead to harmful health effects. This information included The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the contamination did not exceed levels permitted by federal drinking water standards.

Information reviewed included soil and shallow groundwater testing in Playfield Park. No chemical contamination was found in the park’s soil and shallow groundwater. People will not come in contact with chemicals from using the park.

ATSDR and IDPH recommend that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency evaluate whether vapors in the soil can migrate into Playfield Plaza Shopping Center buildings.

The ATSDR report on Crestwood Groundwater Contamination is available for review at http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/HAC/PHA/HCPHA.asp?State=IL. A copy of the report has been placed at the Crestwood Public Library, 4955 W. 135th Street. ATSDR welcomes public comments on the Health Consultation through April 19th. Comments on the health consultation document must be made in writing.
