Federal Black Lung Benefits Program: Number of beneficiaries and total payments by the Social Security Administration and Department of Labor, 2003–2012
Note: The Social Security Administration (SSA) was assigned initial responsibility for administering the Federal Black Lung Benefits Program. In 1997, the responsibility for managing all active SSA Black Lung claims was assigned to the Department of Labor (DOL). This program change was made permanent in 2002 when the Black Lung Consolidation of Administrative Responsibility Act placed the administration of both programs with DOL. The dollar amounts are for fiscal years. See Appendix for information about data source.
