Work-related asthma: Ten most frequently reported agent categories associated with cases of work-related asthma, 2009–2012

Work-related asthma: Ten most frequently reported agent categories associated with cases of work-related asthma, 2009–2012

n.o.s. - not otherwise specified

Note:

Work-aggravated asthma is pre-existing asthma aggravated by exposure or condition at work.

Occupational asthma is induced by workplace exposures that does not meet the criteria for reactive airways dysfunction syndrome.

Reactive airways dysfunction syndrome is characterized by persistent asthma symptoms induced by a one-time, high-level irritant exposure at work.

Confirmed, but unclassified cases are confirmed work-related asthma cases that lack the necessary information to determine if they are new-onset asthma or work-aggravated asthma.

Each case may be associated with up to three putative agents.

Percentages are based on the number of cases (n=3,774).

Each category includes many agents. For the most commonly reported agents within each category presented in this figure see table reference number 2017-926.

Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics (AOEC) exposure coding scheme lists some exposures in these categories as known asthmagens (http://www.aoec.org/tools.htm).
