Activity InterventionMedical monitoring according to SDIA guidelines (1969), regular dust monitoring, removal from exposure (11 years), pre-employment screening using atopy. Medical monitoring included initial examination (medical history and questionnaire, physical examination, chest radiograph, spirometry, skin prick test), and follow-ups taking place every six months for 6 years and annually after 6 years. Follow-up examination consisted of medical history, spirometry, and skin prick test, and chest radiographs repeated annually or biannually. Sickness absences were also monitored.
Participation RateParticipation rate: 72%
Intervention EffectivenessOf the 78 subjects followed up, none had chest radiographs suggestive of lung disease. All subjects made a satisfactory clinical recovery from their respiratory symptoms after removal from enzyme exposure. Limitation: no comparison group.
