Abstract: This report summarizes the cognitive test findings of questions proposed by The American Community Survey Disability Working Group. In the interest of improving disability measures for the American Community Survey (ACS), the work group was established to consider possible modifications to the existing set of questions. After reviewing legislative requirements, the group identified ACS questions to be reworded or replaced and developed a proposed set of alternative questions. Cognitive testing of the proposed questions was conducted jointly by the cognitive laboratory staff at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Center for Survey Methods Research in the Statistical Research Division.
