Item No.: 02
Site: Medical-Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE Log)
Violation: The Excel version of the AGE log did not include a 'Comments or Notes' column. (VSP 2025 Environmental Public Health Standards)
Recommendation: Complete all fields of the AGE surveillance log, even if entry is zero or nonapplicable. If a field is not completed, document the reason in the notes column (for example, a virtual consultation). Ensure the log data is exported in an analyzable form (such as Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Access) in the exact order noted above. Ensure any additional data fields in the surveillance log are entered only outside of the form margins when exported.
Item No.: 02
Site: Medical-Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE Log)
Violation: The documentation of follow-up actions for public vomit or diarrhea incidents did not include determining whether they met the definition of a reportable AGE case and assessing the need for isolation. (VSP 2025 Environmental Public Health Standards)
Recommendation: Maintain the following records on the vessel for 12 months and make them available for review by VSP during inspections and outbreak investigations: Documentation of follow-up actions for public vomit or diarrhea incidents, including determining whether identified individuals meet the definition of a reportable AGE case and assessing the need for isolation.
Item No.: 06
Site: Potable Water-Legionella Sampling
Violation: The ship has not conducted Legionella sampling. Additionally, the ship's Water Safety Plan referenced the 2011 and 2018 versions of the VSP standards which did not have the new Legionella prevention controls. (VSP 2025 Environmental Public Health Standards)
Recommendation: Sample the potable water system for Legionella at least every 6 months. Ensure sample sites are representative of the potable water and RWF systems and number of samples depends on the size and complexity of the vessel. Take follow-up actions when Legionella is detected based on the type of Legionella found, the concentration (for example in CFU/ml), and the extent of colonization. Actions can include (1) Review of the water management program; (2) Root cause analysis to understand possible reasons for Legionella growth; (3) Updates to the water management program if needed. Consider retesting fixtures or devices where Legionella was detected to confirm the effectiveness of the response and to determine if remediation is needed. For additional guidance, see ASHRAE Guideline 12, Appendix C5. The Legionella sampling plan must include a selection of the following locations: (1) Potable water storage tanks; (2) Water heaters and hot water storage; (3) Hot water return lines; (4) Representative points of use in cabins, galleys, and recreational areas. Include a mix of fixture types (showers, sink faucets, tubs). Include potable water samples when temperatures are in the range favorable for Legionella growth (77?113F, 25?45C); (5) Decorative water features; (6) Misting systems; (7) Salon and pedicure devices; (8) Technical water sources with a risk of exposure via aerosolization to crew or passengers, such as deck washing.
Item No.: 09
Site: Recreational Water Facilities-Goofy Pool
Violation: Some free chlorine residuals measurements were out of range for this in-use interactive recreational water facility (RWF). Free chlorine residuals sampled in the body of water measured 1.8 ppm, 1.8 ppm, and 6.2 ppm at the upper level body of water, and 2.7 ppm at the lower level body of water.
Recommendation: Maintain a free halogen residual in recirculated RWFs in the following ranges: Interactive RWFs (activity pools), between 2.0 and 5.0 mg/L (ppm). Immediately close RWFs not maintained within these halogen ranges.
Item No.: 10
Site: Recreational Water Facilities-Goofy Pool Equipment Room
Violation: This interactive RWF had two levels and two analyzers. The lower level analyzer measured a free chlorine residual of 2.2 ppm while the manual test measured 2.6 ppm. The upper level analyzer measured 2.7 ppm while the manual test measured 3.5 ppm. The analyzers were recalibrated after these tests.
Recommendation: Ensure a test kit is available for measuring water quality parameters, including free and total halogen levels (chlorine and bromine, where applicable), pH, and total alkalinity. Ensure test kits are accurate to within 0.2 mg/L (ppm) for halogen and have a testing range of free halogen residual normally maintained in the RWF. Ensure test kits for pH are accurate to within 0.2. Ensure reagents have not expired.
Item No.: 10
Site: Recreational Water Facilities-Whirlpools
Violation: The design for the ship's whirlpools did not include a skim gutter or any other source for effective skimming. Currently, a 1-inch PVC pipe rests three inches below the water level sensor cover and acts as an additional drain. The cruise line is in communication with VSP to find a solution.
Recommendation: For RWFs with skim gutters, ensure the water level reaches at least the skim gutter or overflow level for a portion of the pool perimeter to remove floating debris and the top portion of the pool water for treatment. Install surface skimmers or gutters capable of handling 100% of the filter flow of the recirculation system.
