Interactive Biannual Early Release Estimates

Interactive Biannual Early Release Estimates provide health statistics based on data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) for selected health topics for adults aged 18 years and over. All estimates are unadjusted percentages based on preliminary data files and are released prior to final data editing and final weighting to provide access to the most recent information from the NHIS. Estimates can be grouped by demographic characteristics (such as age, race and Hispanic origin, or sex). Estimates based on NHIS quarterly data are available in Interactive Quarterly Early Release Estimates. Estimates based on the 1997–2018 NHIS can be found in Previous Early Release Reports on Key Health Indicators.

Use the options below to select a topic of interest, the data view ("Multiple half years" or "Single half year"), time period, and grouping variables. If you select "Multiple half years," you can choose a range of half years. The "Single half year" view displays a single half year period. Both views allow for stratification by the grouping variables. Once a grouping variable is selected, a dropdown menu will appear, enabling selection of specific levels in each group.

After you select the available health topics, the table will automatically be updated. The data can be viewed as a plot under the "Charts" tab, with line graphs for trends over time and grouped bar graphs for the cross-sectional view. The "Technical notes" tab displays a link to technical documentation on the measures and methodology used to produce the estimates. The generated table and graph can be downloaded with the download button under each tab. To view the Korn-Graubard (KG) 95% confidence intervals, select the "95% confidence intervals" checkbox.

Notes

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NHIS data collection switched to a telephone-only mode beginning March 19, 2020. Personal visits (with telephone attempts first) resumed in all areas in September 2020. In addition, from August-December 2020, a subsample of adult respondents who completed the NHIS in 2019 were recontacted by telephone and asked to participate again. Response rates were lower and respondent characteristics were different in April–December 2020. Differences observed in estimates between April–December 2020 and other time periods may have been impacted by these differences in respondent characteristics.

Based on household interviews of a sample of the civilian noninstitutionalized population. All estimates are based on preliminary data files. Unknowns were not included in the denominators when calculating percentages.
