Oak Ridge Site Public Meeting in Tennessee on April 13

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, today announced
that a meeting of the Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee (ORRHES) will be held Tuesday, April 13.

The meeting will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. at the
Kingston Community Center

Agenda items will include presentations and discussions on the following items:

  • ATSDR representatives' responses to ORRHES comments on the initial release of the White Oak Creek PHA (12:45 p.m.-1:30 p.m.)
  • Introductory presentation of past releases of mercury from the Y-12 plant
    (1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m.)
  • ORRHES work group reports, discussion and recommendations
    (3:15 p.m.-5:00 p.m.)
  • Public comment opportunities

Members of the community are encouraged to attend and will have the opportunity to make comments from 2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to
5:15 p.m.

ORRHES, a federal advisory committee created in 1999, is comprised of a representative group of citizens that live in the communities surrounding the Oak Ridge Reservation. The group provides advice and recommendations to ATSDR and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the two agencies' public health activities and research regarding the Oak Ridge Reservation site. ORRHES members work with private citizens, advocacy groups, and state and federal agencies in the region and provide community members with an opportunity to communicate directly with federal public health agencies. The group holds regular meetings to update the community on ongoing activities.

A public health assessment evaluating the contaminants released from the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Incinerator at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) in Roane County, Tenn. will be released by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) on March 22. The assessment will be available for public comment and review through May 6.

The Oak Ridge Reservation Health Effects Subcommittee will hold a committee meeting at the Kingston Community Center in Kingston, Tenn., from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Feb. 3. ATSDR will address the initial release of the public health assessment on White Oak Creek radionuclide releases.
