The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, announced today the availability of the final results of its health consultation for the Toms River General Post Office in Toms River, New Jersey.

ATSDR prepared this health consultation to report the results of outdoor and indoor air sampling that targeted a broad range of contaminants at the Toms River Post Office.

An ATSDR health consultation provides advice on specific public health issues related to real or potential exposure to hazardous substances. ATSDR prepares about 1,000 health consultations every year. Most of the requests come from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and state and local health and environmental departments.

The final version of the health consultation for the Toms River General Post Office site will be available for public review beginning December 11, 1998, at the following repository:

New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services
Toms River Field Office
Riverwood Plaza II
67 Route 37 East
Toms River, NJ 08753
(located next to the Community Medical Center)

Community members seeking information on the procedures or content of the health consultation should contact Thomas Mignone, ATSDR Environmental Health Scientist, at (732) 906-6932 in New Jersey, or (212) 637-4306 in New York. Callers should refer to the "Toms River General Post Office site."

Members of the news media are requested to make an appointment to interview ATSDR staff. Phone Mike Groutt, ATSDR Office of Policy and External Affairs, at (404) 639-0501, or via e-mail at the ATSDR Press Office at ATSDRPress@cdc.gov.
