ATSDR Extends Public Comment Period For Trichloroethylene Study Report

Atlanta -- The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a public health agency of U.S. Department Health and Human Services, today announced that the public comment period is being extended for the draft report for its Evaluation of Priority Health Conditions in a Community with Historical Contamination by Trichloroethylene (TCE) study. The area studied includes the communities around Commerce City, Colorado. The public comment period, which was extended at the request of the community, will now run until December 30, 2000.

The overall objective of this study was to use the data collected during previous work with the site to further evaluate priority health conditions in the population in the area. Priority health conditions include neurotoxic and reproductive effects which are believed/known to be related to exposure to hazardous substances. Trichloroethylene was selected as the target contaminant because it had been identified as a contaminant in the ground water at the site and in the local water distribution system and scientists have information on health effects related to TCE.

Comments received during the public comment period will be logged and become part of the administrative record for the health study. Comments (without indication of who made them) and responses will be included in an appendix to the final report.
