The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) will present the results of its public health assessment for the Kim-Stan Landfill site at a meeting of the Kim-Stan Advisory Committee on February 5, 2001.

The meeting will begin on Monday at 10:00 a.m. in the Dabney-Lancaster Community College Library at 1000 Dabney Drive in Clifton Forge, Va. Barbara Cooper, environmental health scientist with ATSDR, will present the findings of the public health assessment and answer questions about the assessment. The meeting is open to the public.

ATSDR prepared the public health assessment after the site was placed on the National Priorities List by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). ATSDR reviewed the available environmental data and published the results of that evaluation in the public health assessment. The assessment was released as a draft for public comment in January, 2001.

Public health assessments report information about hazardous substances in the environment and evaluate whether exposure to those substances in the past, present or future could harm people in the area. They identify health studies or other activities that might be needed and make recommendations to other government agencies, such as EPA and state and local health and environmental departments, concerning actions to protect public health.

Comments received during the public comment period will be logged and become part of the administrative record for the health assessment. Comments (without indication of who made them) and responses will be included in an appendix to the final health assessment. Although names of those who have submitted comments will not be included in the final health assessment, they are subject to release under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
