ATLANTA, GA - The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has released its final public health assessment report, “Evaluation of Community Exposures Related to Coldwater Creek,” in North St. Louis County, MO.
The report considered exposures to people who played or lived along Coldwater Creek downstream from historical radioactive waste storage piles, both in the past (1960s to 1990s) and more recently (2000s and on). ATSDR concluded that residents who regularly played or lived along the creek for many years in the past may have an increased risk of lung cancer, bone cancer, or leukemia. Residents who lived along the creek more recently may have an increased risk of lung cancer.
The final report incorporates responses to comments received on a draft report during a June through August 2018 public comment period. Several details of the evaluation changed, but ATSDR’s overall conclusions and recommendations remain the same.
ATSDR:
- Recommends that potentially exposed residents or former residents share their potential exposure related to Coldwater Creek as part of their medical history and consult their physicians promptly if new or unusual symptoms develop.
- Supports the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program’s continued investigation and cleanup of Coldwater Creek sediments and floodplain soils.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has issued the final version of its public health consultation, Review of Air-Quality Data from January 2000 Sampling Event for the Amoco Oil Co. site, Sugar Creek, Mo.
The health consultation findings indicate that at the eight Amoco-owned homes for which air quality sampling had been done in 2000 no apparent health hazard existed.

One of a series of public health documents, this public health assessment specifically looks at whether residents of the Norledge area, adjacent to the southern boundary of the site, are chronically exposed to benzene and other contaminants in indoor air at levels of potential health concern. And, this public health assessment includes the agency's responses to comments received on the public comment version of the document.

A multiple sclerosis (MS) prevalence study ATSDR conducted in Sugar Creek and Independence, Mo., has found no statistically significant increase in the number of residents with MS in Sugar Creek compared to Independence. ATSDR will conduct follow-up studies to better understand risk factors associated with MS.
