The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) will hold two public availability sessions to discuss municipal water system quality and exposure to trihalomethanes (THMs) detected in the Pahokee and South Bay municipal water systems in Palm Beach County, Fla. The first session will be held Monday, May 22 from 6:30 until 8 p.m. at the Tanner Park Community Center, 105 E. Palm Beach Road in South Bay. The second session will be held Tuesday, May 23 from 6:30 until 8 p.m. at the Glades Academy, 1200 E. Main St. in Pahokee.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) began offering medical evaluations in October to former workers of the Stauffer Chemical Co. in Tarpon Springs, Fla. Only five weeks remain in the testing period, and the federal public health agency encourages eligible workers to take advantage of this free evaluation, which will end on Jan. 31, 2005. The medical evaluation includes a physical exam, a lung function test, chest x-rays and an exit consultation with a doctor.

The medical evaluation will include a physical exam, a lung function test, chest x-rays and an exit consultation with a doctor. The federal public health agency is taking the action in response to community concerns about the health of former Stauffer workers.

ATSDR's public comment version of its public health assessment for Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., concludes that burning of plant materials during prescribed burns or wildfires at the site could cause air contaminants that might result in short-term adverse health effects.
