A report by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) finds that the carcinogen 1,3-butadiene was detected in the Rubbertown industrial area; long term exposure to this chemical, individually as well as in combination with other chemicals, is associated with a low increased risk of developing cancer. The report also finds long term exposure to chemicals in the air in the industrial area, individually and in combination, is unlikely to cause harmful noncancer health effects.

A public health consultation on the Martin County Coal Co. site in Inez, Ky., has been issued by ATSDR for public review and comment through Oct. 14. The agency finds that the site presents no apparent health hazard.

In ATSDR's public health consultation, the agency concludes that there were no exposures to contaminants at levels of health concern for the Martin County Coal Co. site in Inez, Ky. ATSDR categorizes the site as not being an apparent public health hazard. The document evaluates environmental data and addresses community health concerns associated with a coal slurry spill that flooded area streams in 2000. The public comment period for the health consultation lasts through June 9, 2003.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, today announced the release of the final Public Health Assessment for the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant site in Paducah, Kentucky. Following an evaluation of available relevant information, ATSDR concluded that, under existing conditions and normal operations, this site poses no apparent public health hazard for the surrounding community from current (1990-present) exposures to groundwater, surface water, soil and sediment, biota, or air. No apparent public health hazard means that people might be exposed to contaminated environmental media (e.g., air, water, soil) near the site, but this exposure is not expected to cause any adverse health effects.
