ATLANTA, GA The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), released a health consultation today and found that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) exposures could have harmed peoples health before the gas extraction and treatment system were installed at the Fenimore Landfill facility.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) is cautioning residents in a small section of Garfield, NJ to stay out of their basements to prevent potential exposure to a toxic metal called hexavalent chromium. High levels of hexavalent chromium were found at a property near the corner of Midland Avenue and Grand Street in Garfield, New Jersey. There are 709 properties in this area, located near the EC Electroplating site. People in this area should avoid using their basements until the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducts an environmental assessment for hexavalent chromium.

Surface water and sediment at Naval Weapons Station Earle (NWSE) do not pose harmful health effects, says a report by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). The report, called a public health assessment, will be available for public review and comment through July 31.

If any exposure to beryllium and depleted uranium occurred at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (IAAAP) in Middletown, Iowa, it was not at levels significant enough to cause a public health hazard, according to a new health consultation released by ATSDR. The document will be available for public comment at local repositories, including the IAAAP Visitor Reception Center, through Oct. 3, 2003.

At the meeting, ATSDR representatives will present the literature review which the agency has done to determine what is currently known about possible connections between chemical exposures and autism. The meeting will take place at the Brick Township High School, 346 Chambers Bridge Road, from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m.
