Site: Galley-Horizon Court Hood Cleaning Locker
Violation: There was a steady dripping noted from the intermediate air vent of the backflow prevention device.
Recommendation: Ensure that backflow preventers are maintained in good repair.

Violation: The backflow preventer vent holes were pointing up, preventing vented water from properly draining away from the unit.

Violation: Air gaps, utilized as a backflow prevention method, were not listed.
Recommendation: Ensure that the cross-connection control program includes at minimum: a complete listing of cross-connections and the backflow prevention method/device for each, so that there is a match to the plumbing system component and location, and an inspection frequency. Ensure that air-gaps are included in the listing.

Site: Potable Water-
Violation: The potable water lines, at the handwash sink in the garbage room and the water fountains in the engine room, were not striped or painted blue.
Recommendation: Ensure that potable water piping and fittings are painted or stripped auxiliary blue, or in accordance with ISO 14726, at 5 m (15 feet) intervals on each side of partitions, decks, and bulkheads in all spaces, except where the decor would be marred by such markings.

Violation: The pedicure station backflow prevention device's intermediate air vents were fitted with plugs, preventing staff from determining if the unit is functioning properly.
Recommendation: Ensure that backflow preventers are maintained in good repair. Remove the intermediate air vent plugs to allow staff to determine it h unit is leaking or otherwise failed.

Violation: The vents for the backflow protection devices were pointing up for the pedicure units.

Violation: The air gap at the waste line connected to the vent of the backflow protection device was not two times the delivery pipe diameter.
Recommendation: Ensure that air gaps are at least twice the diameter of the delivery fixture opening and a minimum of 3 cm (1 inch).

Site: Recreational Water Facilities-Records
Violation: There were a few days where the chlorine residual was less than 1 ppm and the records indicated that the pool was open. Per staff, the logs reflect the status of the pool before the readings were taken.
Recommendation: Ensure that bathers are not allowed to use the pool before a free residual halogen of 1.0 mg/L (ppm) is achieved.

Violation: A review of the records indicated that there were a few days where the bromine residual was measured at 10 ppm. However, staff were unable to determine if the residual was above 10 ppm since the colorimeter range was 0-10 ppm. Per staff, a new test kit will be ordered.
Recommendation: Ensure that test kits are capable of measuring outside the 0-10 ppm parameter to allow staff to determine if the halogen residual is outside the upper range.

Site: Housekeeping-Deck 8 Midship Pantry
Violation: The handle of the ice scoop was noted in contact with the ice in the ice machine.
Recommendation: During pauses in food preparation or dispensing, ensure that food preparation and dispensing utensils are stored: (5) In a clean, protected location if the utensils, such as ice scoops, are used only with a food that is not potentially hazardous.

Site: Buffet-Horizon Court Sarboard Sandwich Prep Line
Violation: The plastic bin containing tomatoes was positioned at the back of the self-service line requiring passengers to move to the side of the unit to get to the tongs. Additionally, the service tongs were noted in a position indicating that passengers were approaching the bin from the side. The back side of the prep line was not completely protected by a sneeze shield.
Recommendation: Ensure that food on display is protected from contamination by the use of packaging; counter, service line, or salad bar food guards; display cases; or other effective means. Position food containers to allow passenger access from the front of the self-service line.

Violation: The handles of the serving tongs were noted in contact with food on four food trays (cooked tomatoes, cinnamon rolls, cut fruit, and cheese cuts).
Recommendation: During pauses in food preparation or dispensing, ensure that food preparation and dispensing utensils are stored: (1) In the food with their handles above the top of the food and the container.

Violation: A small amount of liquid was dripping at one of the deckhead seam corner plugs at the front of unit #12636. The source of the liquid was not determined. No food was stored in this area.

Violation: The light covers were missing on nine of the light fixtures above the food service counter. Twenty-five covers had been ordered and were scheduled to be delivered on 2/10. The counter space under these fixtures was not being utilized to hold or prepare food.
Recommendation: Ensure that light bulbs are shielded, coated, or otherwise shatter-resistant in areas where there is exposed food, clean equipment, utensils, and linens, or unwrapped single-service and single-use articles.

Violation: A few small flies were noted on the deck head panels above the service counter. The IPM log indicated that flies had been noted in this area on 1/25 and that fogging and drain treatment had been performed.
Recommendation: Ensure that the presence of insects, rodents, and other pests is effectively controlled to minimize their presence in the food storage, preparation, service areas, warewashing, and utensil storage areas aboard a vessel. IPM should re-evaluate the source of the flies and modify treatment methods to ensure effective pest control.
