Recreational Water Facilities-Children's Pool
Violation:
This pool was said to be closed but the gate was not closed. There was a "pool closed" sign screwed onto the gate. The chlorine level was greater than 50 ppm. The chlorine level for the controller in the pump room was at 23.32 ppm. At the time of the inspection the area was roped off for painting and it was said that the painter opened the gate. The gate cannot be locked and this pool is in a remote location on the vessel where there is little or no supervision.
Recommendation:
Ensure that a free residual halogen of >1.0 and <5.0 mg/L (ppm) is maintained in recirculated swimming pools. If the gate cannot be properly secured, ensure that the pool is empty or netted when it is closed for use.

DO NOT USE (whirlpool/spa)-Mid-ship Starboard
Violation:
For five days in May, the pH level was less than 7.0 and there was no indication that any action was taken. The records did not show this whirlpool to be closed on those days. Prior to these dates there was a notation on charts that there was a pH probe failure. During those dates the whirlpool charts showed that the facility was closed for use.
Recommendation:
Ensure that the whirlpool spa water is maintained with a pH between 7.2 and 7.8.

Violation:
It was not clear when the pools were in flow-through (sea-to-sea) operation. Per the engineers, the "outbound" stamp was used to show that the ship was outbound and the pool was in flow-through operation. There were numerous days when this stamp was used when there were no halogen levels and the pools were in flow-through operation. There were also numerous days when the stamp was used and the pools were in recirculation operation.
Recommendation:
Ensure that the pool records clearly show when the operation is flow-through (sea-to-sea).
