Background: ATSDR is a public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. ATSDR's mission is to prevent exposure and adverse human health effects and diminished quality of life associated with exposure to hazardous substances from waste sites, unplanned releases, and other sources of pollution present in the environment.

The Community and Tribal Subcommittee is comprised of four members of ATSDR's Board of Scientific Counselors (BSC). Eleven individuals from communities and tribes affected by environmental contamination serve as Special Consultants to the CTS.

ATSDR's Board of Scientific Counselors provides advice and guidance to the Administrator of ATSDR on the direction, quality and scope of ATSDR's science, research and programs. The Board also provides guidance to help ATSDR work more effectively with its various constituents and to fulfill the agency's mission in protecting America's health from toxic exposures.

The purpose of the CTS is to provide the BSC and ATSDR with the views and recommendations of community/tribal representatives on ATSDR's community involvement program, practices and policies, and other relevant issues impacting communities and tribes who live near Superfund and hazardous waste sites. The Subcommittee provides advice, findings, and recommendations to the BSC on these issues; and brings broad-based community and tribal involvement issues to the attention of the BSC.
