ATSDR Announces Two Public Availability Sessions to Hear Community's Health Concerns About DuPont Delisle Facility Site in Pass Christian, Miss

What: The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), will hold two public availability sessions on Tues., July 30, 2002, in Pass Christian, Miss. The sessions are to provide community members an opportunity to discuss health concerns they believe may be related to the DuPont Delisle Facility site in Pass Christian.

An agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, ATSDR is the principal federal public health agency involved with hazardous waste issues.

Where: The public availability session format allows individual community members to speak privately with an ATSDR representative. The sessions will be in the Pass Christian City Hall's council room, 200 W. Scenic Dr., Pass Christian. The first session is from 1 - 3 p.m., and the second session is from 6 - 8 p.m.

ATSDR identifies persons who might be exposed to hazardous substances in their communities, determines if they have been harmed by their exposure, and recommends actions to safeguard public health in communities.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a joint meeting to discuss the findings of the recently released public health consultation for the DuPont DeLisle Titanium Dioxide Plant in Pass Christian, Miss. ATSDR and EPA will hold the meeting on Nov. 17 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at DeLisle Elementary School, 6303 W. Wittman Road, Pass Christian. The health consultation states that past and current exposures to dioxin-like compounds do not pose harmful health effects for residents near the site. ASTDR recommends additional testing for dioxins in crabs and onsite soils.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) today released the final version of its public health consultation on the Dupont DeLisle Plant Site, in Pass Christian, Miss., which classifies the site as “no public health hazard.” ATSDR conducted the public health consultation in response to a community member’s petition in July, 2002. A public health consultation is a review of available information or collection of new data to respond to a specific health question or request for information about a potential environmental hazard.
