The PHA focuses on air exposures only and includes new data about these exposures. A future public health assessment will focus on other types of exposure.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a federal public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services today releases two Public Health Assessments (PHAs) for the Kerr-McGee Chemical Corporation site in Columbus, MS. One PHA addresses air exposure to contaminants from the Kerr-McGee site. The other PHA addresses exposure to hazardous substances in soil, sediment and surface water on or near the facility.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) is seeking public comments on the health assessment of the Sonford Products Site in Flowood, MS. The purpose of the public health assessment (PHA) was to find out if people have been or are being exposed to hazardous substances in the surface soil at residential properties adjacent to the Sonford Products Site and if the exposure might affect their health. The PHA found that surface soil on residential properties adjacent to the site does not pose a health hazard to residents living there.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a federal public health agency, will hold a public availability session for the Flowood community to discuss ATSDRâs activities at the Sonford Products Site and to gather health concerns from area residents. The site is located at 3506 Payne Drive in Flowood. From 1972 to 1985, two processing plants produced wood-treating chemicals and pest control products at this location. Both plants are now closed and a septic tank company leases the property.

A study released by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) finds that eating typical amounts of crabmeat from St. Louis Bay, MS is safe; however, frequent consumption of crab hepatopancreas - or the "mustard" or liver part of the crab - can be a health concern for some.

Chemicals found in soil samples collected after Hurricane Katrina near the DuPont DeLisle Titanium Dioxide Plant in Pass Christian, Miss., pose no harmful health risks for nearby residents, says the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). However, as a precaution, ATSDR recommends further testing of crabs to determine if dioxin-like compounds can be found in the food chain of St. Louis Bay.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a joint meeting to discuss the findings of the recently released public health consultation for the DuPont DeLisle Titanium Dioxide Plant in Pass Christian, Miss. ATSDR and EPA will hold the meeting on Nov. 17 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at DeLisle Elementary School, 6303 W. Wittman Road, Pass Christian. The health consultation states that past and current exposures to dioxin-like compounds do not pose harmful health effects for residents near the site. ASTDR recommends additional testing for dioxins in crabs and onsite soils.

August 19, 2004, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) will hold an open house about the public comment version of its public health assessment for the Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC) site in Gulfport, Miss. The open house will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Isaiah Fredericks Community Center, 3312 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Gulfport. Members of the community are encouraged to attend the open house and will have the opportunity to ask questions about the public health assessment and to speak with staff from ATSDR and the Mississippi State Department of Health.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) today released the final version of its public health consultation on the Dupont DeLisle Plant Site, in Pass Christian, Miss., which classifies the site as no public health hazard. ATSDR conducted the public health consultation in response to a community members petition in July, 2002. A public health consultation is a review of available information or collection of new data to respond to a specific health question or request for information about a potential environmental hazard.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, today released the public comment version of its public health consultation on groundwater sampling in the Dupont Delisle community in Delisle, Miss. ATSDR will hold a public meeting on June 5 to hear the community's health concerns about the Dupont Delisle site, which is a titanium dioxide facility Delisle, Miss. At the meeting ATSDR's representatives also will discuss the results of its analysis of data from collected water samples and of mineral levels from hair samples. The meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. at the Pass Christian City Hall, Council Room, 200 West Scenic Drive, Pass Christian, Miss.
