ATLANTA – Chemicals from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant (RFAAP) are not likely to affect local public or private drinking water. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) reports this finding in its Radford Army Ammunition Plant draft health consultation, available for public comment until May 23, 2014.
Since the 1940s, the Radford plant has made explosives and propellants for the U.S. military and others. In February 2012, a local group asked ATSDR whether people living near RFAAP were exposed to harmful chemicals from the plant. In response, ATSDR evaluated data and assessed community health concerns related to whether any chemicals in RFAAP surface and groundwater might contaminate public and private drinking water.
In the draft health consultation, ATSDR found that chemicals from the RFAAP facility are not expected to harm people’s health through either public drinking water supplies or private drinking water wells. This finding is based on examination of drinking water sources and wells in relation to RFAAP’s location. The finding also draws on data and science-based considerations that show surface water and groundwater from the RFAAP site flow into New River, where dilution and other natural processes reduce any chemical concentrations to below harmful levels.
The draft health consultation is available for review at http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/HAC/PHA/HCPHA.asp?State=VA. A copy is also available at both the Radford Public Library at 30 W. Main Street in Radford and the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library at 125 Sheltman Street in Christiansburg.
ATSDR staff will summarize the draft health consultation findings and will be available to discuss those findings on Thursday, May 1, 2014, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at Belview Elementary School at 3187 Pepper’s Ferry Road in Radford. Members of the media will have the opportunity to ask questions prior to the event, between 6:15 and 6:45 pm.
ATSDR welcomes public comments on the Radford Army Ammunition Plant draft health consultation. The comment period will extend through May 23, 2014. In an appendix to the final health consultation, ATSDR will respond to written comments received during the public comment period but will not list the names of those who submitted the comments. Note, however, that should ATSDR receive any U.S. Freedom of Information Act requests for commenter’s names, ATSDR might be required to release those names.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a public health agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has released a public health assessment addressing contaminants at the St. Juliens Creek Annex site in Chesapeake, Va.
St. Juliens Creek Annex was an ordnance storage and loading/unloading site for the U.S. Navy. The site is located at the junction of St. Juliens Creek and the Elizabeth River. Formerly, major operations included equipment repair and maintenance, and ordnance loading, testing, disassembly, destruction and disposal. Current operations include a radar test range, scrap and salvage operations, and administrative, warehouse and light industrial functions. Fences built around the site during World War II prevent public access to St. Juliens Creek Annex.
