ATSDR Releases Report and Seeks Public Comments for Pike and Mulberry Street PCE Plume

ATLANTA, GA - The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has released its health investigation report, “Analysis of Contaminants in Drinking Water and Indoor Air,” for the Pike and Mulberry Street PCE Plume in Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana, for comment.  ATSDR will accept comments from the public until April 3, 2019. 

ATSDR evaluated whether exposures to tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE) from groundwater plume contaminants in drinking water and indoor air in homes and commercial buildings in the community were high enough to affect people’s health. ATSDR used drinking water data collected by the City of Martinsville Water Utility and air data collected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The public comment process gives residents the opportunity to review the report and to give their input. ATSDR’s responses to those comments will be included in the appendices of the final report.

The health consultation found that the contaminated water from the site poses no apparent public health hazard since the blending and treatment of drinking water by the Indiana American Water Company (IAWC) has lessened the contamination to levels below a health concern.
