The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has released its final public health assessment for the Jacobsville Neighborhood Soil Contamination (JNSC) site in Evansville, Indiana. The report evaluates whether exposure to lead and arsenic in soil, sediment, surface and groundwater could harm people’s health.
ATSDR reviewed available environmental data about the site and concluded:
- lead and arsenic in soils of Evansville (Vanderburgh County) pose a health risk;
- children in Vanderburgh County have higher blood lead levels (BLLs) compared to children statewide;
- children swallowing soil and dust containing lead, in JNSC yards, could experience health problems;
- lead in the soil could affect the health of babies if pregnant women accidently swallow soil with lead in it;
- long-term exposure to arsenic in the soil may increase the risk for certain cancers.

ATSDR encourages residents to get their young children’s blood tested for lead and to contact the EPA to get their yards tested.
ATSDR is working with other agencies and state and local governments to help people reduce or stop lead and arsenic exposures at the JNSC site.

The health consultation found that the contaminated water from the site poses no apparent public health hazard since the blending and treatment of drinking water by the Indiana American Water Company (IAWC) has lessened the contamination to levels below a health concern.
