Recreational use of Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park (IBSP) is not expected to harm people's health, says the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). Both ATSDR and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommend that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources continue to conduct regular beach sweeps and advise the public of the presence of asbestos-containing material. If asbestos-containing materials are found, IBSP visitors should report them to beach staff and should not attempt to remove the material or otherwise disturb it.

The purpose of the public health assessment is to find out if people are being or may have been exposed to hazardous substances from the former base and to determine if the exposure might affect their health.

The Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) will host a public meeting in Bridgeport on Tuesday, April 18, to gather community health concerns related to the Lawrence Oil Field in Bridgeport, Ill., operated by PennTex Resources. The meeting will be held at the Red Hill High School cafeteria at 908 Church St., in Bridgeport from 7 to 9 p.m.

ATSDR previously released this public health assessment as a draft for public comment. The final version addresses any comments which were received during the public comment period, and includes changes where appropriate.
