During the 8/26-9/2 voyage, a food handler was in isolation for AGE symptoms, but was observed at the staff mess for breakfast; this crew member argued with the medical staff that he felt fine and should not be in isolation. This crew member received disciplinary action. During the 8/19-26 voyage, a food handler experienced AGE onset at 1855, and worked from 1655 to 1920; the crew member waited until the second loose bowel movement, which occurred at 1920, to report AGE symptoms to supervisor and then reported to the medical. This crew member did not receive disciplinary action. During the 8/12-19 voyage, a crew member experienced AGE onset at 0850, and worked from 0806-1005; the crew member waited until the second loose bowel movement, which occurred at 1000, to report AGE symptoms to supervisor and then reported to medical. This crew member received disciplinary action. A similar violation was written during the last inspection.

Recommendation:
When food employees meet the case definition for AGE, ensure the following actions are taken: (1) isolate in cabin or designated restricted area until symptom-free for a minimum of 48 hours; (2) follow-up with and receive approval by designated medical personnel before returning crew to work; (3) document date and time of last symptom and clearance to return to work. When nonfood employees meet the case definition for AGE, ensure the following actions are taken: (1) isolate in cabin or designated restricted area until symptom-free for a minimum of 24 hours; (2) follow-up with and receive approval by designated medical personnel before returning crew to work; (3) document the date and time of last symptom and clearance to return to work.
