Item No.: 08
Site: Galley-Deck 15 - Tap That Hot
Violation: The undercounter backflow prevention devices on the portside and starboard side were heavily corroded. A technician was called to replace the devices.
Recommendation: Maintain backflow prevention devices in good repair.
Item No.: 10
Site: Recreational Water Facilities-Main Pool
Violation: The Main Pool was not filled to the level of the skim gutters across the entire pool; consequently, the pool was skimming less than 25%. The inadequate skim level was noted during the previous inspection. During the last inspection, it was noted 'further correspondence is taking place' regarding the skim level. The inspector requested documentation of this correspondence, but the ship was unable to provide previous correspondence of it during the time of the inspection.
Recommendation: For RWFs with skim gutters, ensure that the fill level of the RWF is to the level of the skim gutters.
Item No.: 10
Site: Recreational Water Facilities-Deck 15 - Shepherd's Hook
Violation: The shepherd's hook was missing the hook. Crew attached a hook to the pole before the end of the inspection.
Recommendation: Provide a rescue or shepherd?s hook and an approved flotation device at a prominent location (visible from the full perimeter of the pool) at each RWF that has a depth of 1 meter (3 feet) or greater. Mount these devices in a manner that allows for easy access during an emergency. Ensure the pole of the rescue or shepherd?s hook is long enough to reach the center of the deepest portion of the pool from the side plus 2 feet. Ensure it is a light, strong, nontelescoping material with rounded, nonsharp ends. Ensure the approved flotation device includes an attached rope that is at least 2/3 of the maximum pool width. Ensure the rescue or shepherd?s hook is long enough to touch the bottom center of the deepest portion of the RWF plus 2 feet (0.6 meters) as measured from the closest edge without an obstruction. This edge can only be used for measurement if someone could freely walk down both sides without an obstruction such as a waterfall, fountain, statue, etc. For a rectangular pool, ensure the shorter distance is measured from the long side of the rectangle as long as there are no obstructions. Measure the 2 feet (0.6 meters) distance from where the shepherd?s hook crosses the fill line of the RWF.
Item No.: 11
Site: Medical-Crew Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE) Reporting
Violation: The review of the acute gastroenteritis (AGE) logs found that one nonfood employee experienced onset of AGE symptoms on 20 June 2023 at 1830, but did not report to medical until 21 June 2023 at 1224. Records indicated that the employee was immediately isolated in a cabin after reporting to medical. The Public Health Officer completed additional training with the employee when they were released from isolation.
Recommendation: Ensure all crew members quickly report to the medical staff when experiencing AGE symptoms
Item No.: 18
Site: Provisions-Deck 4 Meat Poultry Defrost 19
Violation: A container of cut chicken was not fully covered with the plastic wrapping. Water accumulated on top of the plastic wrapping and was entering the container. Crew immediately removed the container to be discarded.
Recommendation: Protect food from cross-contamination or other sources of contamination by storing the food in packages, covered containers, or wrappings.
Item No.: 22
Site: Galley-Deck 6 - Dishwasher (Portside)
Violation: The flight-type dishwasher's digital display gauge was not reading accurate wash temperatures. The gauge was reading a temperature of 180°F. The inspector used a thermometer to measure the wash tank which yielded a temperature of 167°F. A technician was called to fix the display gauge.
Recommendation: Ensure water temperature-measuring devices are scaled: (1) in Celsius or dually scaled in Celsius and Fahrenheit are designed to be accurate to within 1.5°C (within 3°F) in the intended range of use; (2) only in Fahrenheit are designed to be accurate to within 3°F in the intended range of use.
