organization.
During the indicated time period, mortality data gathered from the National Center
for Health Statistics (NCHS) multiple cause-of-death data files are assigned to
specific counties within a state based on current county name. See U.S. Census Bureau
for more information (http://www.census.gov/geo/reference/county-changes.html)
about county names and the years the changes were made.
1 Mortality data from the "Aleutians Islands" were coded by NCHS from
1968–1993. We arbitrarily recoded these data to the Aleutians East Borough,
primarily for mapping purposes. Starting in 1994, NCHS began coding mortality data
for both the Aleutians East Borough and the Aleutians West Census Area.
2 Mortality data from the Bristol Bay Borough included mortality data
from the Dillingham Census Area and the Lake and Peninsula Borough from 1968–1981.
3 Mortality data from the Dillingham Census Area included mortality data
from the Lake and Peninsula Borough from 1982–1993.
4 Kobuk Census Area included the former Kobuk District and the former
Kobuk Borough.
