ISO 13995:2000 specifies a test method for the determination of the resistance to puncture and dynamic tearing of protective clothing materials which are used in situations where snagging and tearing could result in unacceptable damage to the clothing or danger to the wearer through loss of integrity of a barrier. It is intended that the performance levels determined will be of use in specifying materials for use in situations where the risk of harm is related to the size of puncture and tear that may occur in accidents.

"Protective clothing - Mechanical properties - Determination of resistance to cutting by sharp objects"

This International Standard specifies a cut test method, and related calculations, for use on materials and assemblies designed for protective clothing. The test determines resistance to cutting by sharp edges, such as knives, sheet metal parts, glass, bladed tools and castings. This test does not provide data on the resistance to penetration by pointed objects such as needles and thorns. The test described in this International Standard is not considered suitable for testing materials made from chain mail and metal plates. The text of this International Standard does not include provisions for the safeguard of the operator.

"Protective clothing - Gloves and arm guards protecting against cuts and stabs by hand knives - Part 1. Chain mail gloves and arm guards"

This part of ISO 13999 specifies requirements for the design, penetration resistance, ergonomic characteristics, straps, weight, material, marking and instructions for use, of gloves and arm guards. It also specifies the appropriate test methods. This part of ISO 13999 applies to protective chain-mail gloves and to metal and plastics arm guards for use with hand knives.

"Protective clothing - Gloves and arm guards protecting against cuts and stabs by hand knives - Part 3. Impact cut test for fabric, leather, and other materials"

This part of ISO 13999 specifies an impact cut test for use on fabric, leather and other materials used in protective clothing materials, gloves and arm guards. This test assesses the resistance of the test specimen to cutting by a sharp, straight knife-edge after the point of the test knife has perforated the test specimen. The length of the cut produced by the particular impact energy is proportional to the depth of penetration of the knife, which is easily measured. This test method provides information about the resistance of the product to stabbing cuts, slashing cuts, shearing cuts and impact cuts by acute edged objects that are not necessarily sharp. Abrasion by coarse sharp abraders such as road surfaces, concrete building blocks, or rough metal castings, is the superimposition of numerous small cuts. The results from this test give a good prediction of the resistance of products to these types of harsh abrasion. This test does not provide information about the resistance of the product to penetration by thorns or needles. Annex A of this part of ISO 13999 gives recommendations for the specification of impact cut tests on materials and products such as gloves and arm guards and gives the list of information which should be specified in the product standard in order to be able to apply this test.

This international standard specifies test methods, performance requirements and design parameters for clothing for protection against heat and flame intended for drivers in automobile competitions. This International Standard concerns outer garments, under garments, socks, gloves and balaclava hoods. Shoes and helmets are excluded.
