Atlanta - The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a federal public health agency of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, has prepared a Public Health Consultation for the Bucks Harbor Air Force Radar Tracking Station site. A Public Health Consultation is a way for ATSDR to respond quickly to a need for health information on toxic substances and to make recommendations for actions to protect the public's health.
In April 2001, ATSDR met with community members to learn about health concerns that may be related to the site and to tour the area. Information about the site from several other sources was also reviewed. A Public Health Consultation was written based on this information, conclusions about the effect of the site on public health were made, and recommendations were developed to protect public health.
The public availability session to present the Public Health Consultation, its conclusions, and recommendations will be held Thursday, September 6, 2001, at 7:00 PM, at the Machiasport Town Office in Machiasport, Maine.
The Public Health Consultation is available to the public at the Town Office, which will serve as the Document Repository. Community members who can not attend the meeting, or who would like additional information, should contact Scott Sudweeks, ATSDR toxicologist in Atlanta, at (404) 498-0390, or William Sweet, ATSDR Senior Regional Representative in Boston, at (617) 918-1495. You may also contact ATSDR staff toll-free at 1(888) 42-ATSDR.
Members of the news media are requested to make an appointment to interview ATSDR staff. Please call Mike Groutt or John Florence, ATSDR Office of Policy and External Affairs, at (404) 498-0070.
