This computer generated image depicts Hygeia Philo, the CDC’s lead avatar in the virtual world, Second Life. This is the fourth design stage of the avatar. This image depicted both a more corporate look to the avatar, as well as a real world image of the CDC’s marquee, while placing them into the virtual world. Dr. John Anderton designed Hygeia Philo, whose name is based on the Greek meaning ‘lover of health', to be the modern muse of health, serving as lead health spokesperson and health educator in this new virtual space. See PHIL 10002, 10005, 10007, 10008, 10009, 10012, 10013, 10014, 10015, and 10016 for additional images of Ms. Philo. In preparation for the first CDC Health Fair, which took place inside Second Life in October 2006, the avatar was again outfitted with a more corporate design for clothing, more realistic facial features and hair, and positioned alongside the official CDC logo so as to enforce brand identification.
