Caption:
Depicted in this 2007 photograph was Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), former Acting Associate Director for Laboratory Science, Microbiologist Dr. Hsi Liu (left), and staff Biologist, Damien Danavall, as they were performing a real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction) assay using a 96-well plate format. PCR produces large amounts of replicated DNA or RNA molecular sequences. Using this process, very small amounts of these nucleic acid molecules can be analyzed.
