Caption:
This 1962 photograph depicted the face of a 38-year-old female smallpox patient in Cardiff, Wales during an epidemic. This woman had been vaccinated 3-days after she’d been exposed to the virus. Photographed on day-6, these variable-sized lesions were classified as vaccinial-modified variola major. See PHIL 10420 for a view of this patient's left arm at the point at which the vaccination was administered, and PHIL 10421 for a view of her right arm, whereupon, some lesions had developed along some scratch marks. This was what was termed a scanty eruption.
