ID#: 11898
Caption:
This scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image revealed some of the ultrastructural features seen on the surface of an Acanthamoeba polyphaga protozoan. This particular amoeba displayed a rather smooth exterior, possibly in the process of encystation, a protective mechanism, which will lead to this organism developing a thickened, double-layered cell wall, and entering a stage of dormancy. Note PHIL 11900, where you are able to see this amoeba, adjacent to another, that was in the trophozoite, amoeboid stage of its life cycle.
