Caption:
This image depicts four capped test tubes, each representing a stab culture containing a growth medium of lysine-iron agar (LIA), which had been inoculated with a different bacterium. Based on how the tubes were labeled, from left to right, the first tube was inoculated with S. typhi, the second with Salmonella, the third, Arizona, and the fourth, Citrobacter. The indicator used is bromcresol purple, which in the presence of an alkaline environment will produce a purple color, while in an acidic environment, will produce a yellow color.
