In this historic 1965 image, laboratorian, Ms. Janet Spillane, was carrying out a determination of the total nitrogen contained in a sample of compost refuse. Modern day protocols now call for the laboratorian, executing such tasks, to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety goggles, gloves, and a facemask.
