This historic 1963 photograph depicted laboratorian, Deanne Tolson, as she was preparing vials containing an unknown reagent, for lyophilization, otherwise known as freeze-drying, prior to their shipment. Lyophilization prolongs the lifespan of perishable materials, so that they may be shipped, and stored for a much longer time, often without the need for refrigeration. Modern day protocols now call for the laboratorian executing such tasks, to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety goggles, gloves, and a facemask.
