This photographic collage depicts the karyotype that would represent the chromosomal configuration, Trisomy E, also known as Trisomy 18, or Edwards syndrome. In this particular case, the cells in a person with Trisomy 18 contain an abnormal chromosomal complement, which involved the inclusion of an additional 18th chromosome (see arrow), in whole, or in part. Infants with Edwards syndrome exhibit a number of congenital anatomical, and physiological abnormalities in common including a reduced birth weight, kidney abnormalities, cardiac abnormalities, reduced size of cranium with accompanying mental retardation, reduced chin size, cleft palate, low-set ears, overlapping configuration of fingers, breathing and eating problems, as well as others.
